Virginian-Pilot's Stephen Katz Wins POYi's Newspaper POY Title

COLUMBIA, MO (February 24, 2008) - After the first week of judging the University of Missouri School of Journalism's Pictures of the Year International, Stephen M. Katz of The Virginian-Pilot has been named the contest's Newspaper Photographer of the Year.

Scott Strazzante of the Chicago Tribune was runner-up, and Kuni Takahashi of the Chicago Tribune was third.

Strazzante also won first place in the Community Awareness Award category for his long-term personal project "Another Country." The story, presented as photographic diptychs, is about a 118-acre family farm near Lockport, IL, that was sold and reborn as a subdivision of homes. The essay pairs images of the family farm as it was with current-day pictures of the subdivision that was built on the land.

Katz, Strazzante, and Takahashi are also members of the National Press Photographers Association.

POYi judging continues next week with the contest's magazine divisions, and the multimedia and editing divisions will be judged beginning on March 2.

The POYi judges this year are Jeanie Adams-Smith from Western Kentucky University; Ruth Fremson from The New york Times, Wen Huang from the Xinhua News Agency in Beijing, China; freelance sports photojournalist Brad Mangin from San Francisco; Sue Brisk from Magnum Photo Agency; Ruth Eichhorn from GEO magazine; photojournalist Chris Hondros from Getty Images; photojournalist Brenda Ann Kenneally; Keith Graham from the University of Montana; photojournalist Michele McDonald from the Boston Globe; and MSNBC director of multimedia Robert Hood.
