Travis Dove Wins College Photographer Of The Year

 

COLUMBIA, MO (November 9, 2007) - Tonight judges named Travis Dove of Ohio University the 62nd annual College Photographer of the Year at the end of judging at the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia.

Dove’s work was awarded the gold in the portfolio category as well as gold in the portrait and documentary categories and awards of excellence in the sports feature and pictorial categories.

Dominic Nahr of Ryerson University is the first runner-up with silver in the portfolio category, gold in international picture story, bronze in the portrait category and a bronze and an award of excellence in the spot news category. Brian Frank of San Francisco State University is the second Runner-up with a bronze in the portfolio category, gold in the spot news category, and bronze in the documentary category.

Dove has an undergraduate degree from Wake Forest and is working toward a master's degree in photography at Ohio University. He has freelanced for the News & Observer, The Chapel Hill News, and The Durham News in North Carolina, and interned at The Charlotte Observer, The Augusta Chronicle, and The Valley News. This year's judges were Kathy Kielszewski of the Detroit Free Press; Richard Koci Hernandez of the San Jose Mercury News; Susan Smith from National Geographic; and Mike Stocker of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Judges viewed over 10,645 still images and 122 multimedia projects entered by 461 student photographers from 88 colleges and universities in 10 different countries.

The contest is sponsored by the National Press Photographers Foundation, the University of Missouri, National Geographic, the Missouri Photographic Workshop, and The Poynter Institute for Media Studies. The contest is directed by University of Missouri associate professor of photojournalism Rita Reed.

The College Photographer of the Year Competition was founded by Cliff and Vi Edom in 1945. The University of Missouri administers the contest with support from its co-sponsor, Nikon Inc.

The National Press Photographers Foundation administers the Colonel William J. Lookadoo and the Milton Freier Memorial Awards in conjunction with the contest. In 2005, National Geographic returned as a contributing sponsor and offers an internship to the Gold winner in the Portfolio category. Winners in individual categories of the contest are awarded equipment and additional educational opportunities provided by Nikon Inc., Poynter, and the Missouri Photo Workshop.
