Darrell Barton, Still Photographer?

Darrell Brarton, TV photojournalistCHILLICOTHE, MO (October 1, 2007) - If you asked most folks in journalism if they've ever heard of Darrell Barton, you're likely to hear references to The Legendary Darrell Barton, one of the world's premiere television news photographers and visual storytellers, a veteran faculty member of NPPA's NewsVideo Workshop each year in Oklahoma, a man who for more than three decades as been the "go to" guy for every major news show and network, a two-time NPPA Television News Photographer of the Year, and a Sprague Award winner. Yes, that Darrell Barton.

But Darrell Barton, still photography student at the 59th annual Missouri Photo Workshop?

Yep, same guy.

"This year, the NewsVideo Workshop in Norman included several newspaper still photographers who learned from veteran news photographers," Seth Gitner, chair of NPPA's multimedia committee said today. "And now longtime television photographer Darrell Barton has attended the Missouri Photo Workshop for still photographers. I think having Barton attend the workshop is true convergence at work, and a great step for visual storytelling. With a still camera in hand, Barton learned how still photographers capture the moment, one frame at a time."

"I think it is imperative that we understand the 'convergence' of video storytelling and still photography," Vme Smith told News Photographer magazine today. "Darrell Barton's story and multimedia project were very interesting. So much has happened since I learned about the Speed Graphic! Can you imagine what we might have 60 years from now?" Smith is the daughter of Missouri Photojournalism Workshop founders Cliff and Vi Edom, which was launched in 1949 at the Missouri School of Journalism, and she's director of the annual "Truth With A Camera" workshop.

A student from the University of Missouri followed Barton around at the workshop, held this year in Chillicothe. You can watch Leah Gallo's piece titled "Darrell Barton: Freeze Frame" online here. The slideshow also includes photographs by Barton, Nancy Clinkshanks, and Shane Epping. Barton speaks about the workshop and the still photography experience himself in the piece, including the fact that when he was a young man his goal was to be a still photographer. Barton's story from the week, "Nancy: A Life Within ... A Life Apart," is online here.
