Women In Photojournalism: Expanding Our Visions
AUSTIN, TX (August 14, 2007) - How will you survive in today’s changing newsroom? Will you be left behind or learn what it takes to keep up with the changes? Come to Austin, TX, for NPPA's Women in Photojournalism Conference August 17-19, 2007, to learn skills which will help you survive today’s changing newsroom.
The Women in Photojournalism Conference has been traveling across the country for the past 18 years. The conference features a full program for both print and television photojournalists.
Speakers will include Pauline Lubens, from the San Jose Mercury News; Melissa Lyttle, of the St. Petersburg Times and creator of “APhotoaDay”; Preston Gannaway, from The Concord Monitor; April Saul, of the Philadelphia Inquirer; and Tom Kennedy from Washingtonpost.com and Newsweek Interactive. Billy Calzada and Anita Baca, from the San Antonio Express News, will offer a limited seating workshops in “Creating your own Soundslides Presentations” on both Saturday and Sunday. Seating is limited to 30 each day.
Also on the still photography program, Karen Warren, a staff photographer for the Houston Chronicle, and Deborah Cannon, a staff photographer for the Austin American-Statesman, will conduct a Sports Photography workshop on Sunday.
Kristen Bergeron of KTVT-TV in Dallas will open Friday night's television program with a presentation about "Putting Emotion In Your Stories." Regional TV Photographers of the Year will be presented Friday evening, hosted by Todd Rogenthien of Austin's KVUE-TV, followed by a roundtable critique session presented by the conference staff.
Linda Angelle of KXAS-TV in Dallas (an NPPA past president) will speak Saturday on "Finding Your Passion: It's All About Attitude, and Larry Burns and Mike Humphries from KENS-TV in San Antonio will present "Back To Basics." Rogenthien and Christina Haas, KVUE-TV's evening news anchor, will present a two-part session, "Making The Team Work."
On Sunday, Karen LaFleur from NBC, formerly with KHOU-TV in Houston, TX, presents "What's Happening In Today's Newsrooms," and Lorri Burchett will speak about "Building Blocks To Great Storytelling." Bergeron returns to present "Finding Great Moments," and Karen Loke of Texas Parks & Wildlife television will present "Writing For Photojournalists."
The weekend kicks off with a welcome reception and special “Walkabout” on Friday night, August 17, 2007, sponsored by Canon. The Congress Avenue Bridge is the home of North America’s largest colony of bats. Every night at sunset, the bats take off into the night. It’s truly one of the most amazing sights you’ve ever seen. Pictures taken from that will be judged and winners will be selected. Saturday August 18, 2007, features a special gallery reception and exhibit featuring the winning images from the “Expanding our Visions” photography contest.
There will be a print auction during the conference, with some of the proceeds going to benefit the medical fund of VII photojournalist Alexandra Boulat, who remains in a coma at the Lariboisière Hospital in Paris following a brain hemorrhage in early June while working in Ramallah.
