Photographing Barry Bonds' Record-breaking Home Run
SANTA ROSA, CA (August 7, 2007) - A story in today's Santa Rosa Press Democrat by photojournalist John Burgess details his quest to cover Barry Bonds hitting his 756th home run to pass Henry Aaron for the major league baseball home run record. To get the shot, Burgess had to cover the story for 16 days, cover 13 games, and travel to Los Angeles and San Diego, postponing his family's vacation, to shoot Bonds hitting the record-breaking ball finally on August 7 at AT&T Park.
Burgess tells the story in his own words here, and a gallery of his images from the big night is here.
