Survey For TV Freelancers Starts In July
EUGENE, OR (June 8, 2007) – Kathleen Ryan, a graduate student working on her Ph.D at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, is doing a survey to study the use of freelance television photographers and she hopes that NPPA members and TV photojournalists will participate in the study.
Ryan writes, "NBC's recent staff cutbacks highlight a growing trend in network news. According to recent labor union contracts, up to 60% of on- and off-camera workers at networks are freelancers. In reality, that percentage may be much higher, due to the number of non-union jobs and programs. How many freelancers are working in television news? Are they happy with their jobs? A new study being conducted this summer seeks to answer those questions."
Ryan is a former network news freelancer for NBC and ABC. Results from her survey will be published by the National Press Photographers Association later this year. Ryan says the survey is designed to find out what freelancers think about their work, what jobs they hold, and how many different employers make up their client base. It also seeks to discover if freelancers are seeking full-time employment, or if they prefer non-staff jobs.
"In order to fully gauge the wide variety of freelance workers, participation from all types of workers is crucial: from photographers and editors to reporters, producers and engineers," Ryan says.
"If you know someone who might be interested in participating, please feel free to forward the link to them," she says. The survey will be active from July 1 through August 30, 2007.
