Getty Grants Deadline Is May 15
SEATTLE, WA (May 9, 2007) – Getty Images say they are now accepting applications for their bi-yearly grant award. Photographers have until May 15, 2007, to postmark applications for the next three $20,000 Getty Images Grants for Editorial Photography. The winners will be announced in September, 2007.
Getty says that to encourage and support talented photojournalists across the globe, they award five grants each year, three in September and two in February. In addition to $20,000 and project assistance from Getty, grant winners have the option to sign a one year deal, allowing their work to be marketed and distributed through Getty’s network.
For the February 2007 grant, the program attracted a record 153 entries from photojournalists in 26 countries, Kristi Jutras said. Winners were Ziyah Gafic, who proposed to use his grant to complete his series of photo essays titled "Troubled Islam - Short Stories From Troubled Societies," and Christopher Anderson, who said he would use the grant to focus on a project titled "The Bolivarian Revolution - Venezuela and Bolivia at a Crossroads."
The judges for this round of grants are Michele McNally, assistant managing editor of photography for The New York Times; Elisabeth Biondi, visuals editor for The New Yorker; Paolo Pellegrin, a Magnum photojournalist; and W.M. Hunt, co-founder of the Hasted Hunt Gallery.
Grant application and submission guidelines, plus additional information on previous winners, their projects, and the judges can be found at here.
Applications must include a written proposal of 550 words or less to explain the scope, significance and journalistic merit of their chosen project, along with a supporting portfolio of between 30 and 60 images of the applicant’s previous work.
“This is the third year of the grant, and it is now established as one of the most important and significant awards for photojournalists in our industry,” Aidan Sullivan, vice president of photo assignments, United States, for Getty said. “We are delighted and proud to offer this much needed support, enabling dedicated photographers to embark on their chosen projects.”
