McColl, Reese, Reelected In Region 10

DURHAM, NC (December 13, 2006) – National Press Photographers Association national secretary Sean D. Elliot has tallied and verified the votes in Region 10’s online November election, and the incumbent Regional officers have been reelected.

Matt McColl of KVBC-TV in Las Vegas got the most votes for director and Tim Reese of the Sacramento Bee was again voted in as associate director. They ran against candidates Jill Sybalsky and Lucjan Szewczyk.

“I want to thank Jill and Lucjan for volunteering to run for office and participate in the process. It is the work of our volunteers that makes the NPPA what it is,” Elliot said.

Elliot reports that 84 ballots were cast in the Region 10 election. There are 1,058 eligible member voters in Region 10, so the votes cast represent a 7.9 percent voter turnout.

An online election is currently taking place in Region 4 throughout the month of December. “Results in that election will be available shortly after New Years,” Elliot said today.

As for the remaining even-numbered Regions that should be holding elections this year, “Regions 2, 6, and 8 are still in the process of finding the mandated number of candidates to hold their elections,” Elliot said. “If slates are not fully certified by the end of this week (December 15), these regions will not vote any sooner than March. Because the NPPA national office staff will be fully occupied with the process of preparing and launching the 2007 Best Of Photojournalism contest starting right after the Christmas season, elections will be put off until March in the interest of not detracting from the staff’s attention to this most important program.”

“As directed by NPPA’s Standing Rules, two candidates must run for each office for a valid election to be held,” Elliot said. “In the event that full slates of candidates are not found, elections will be postponed until full slates are ready. If the remaining Regions can’t identify full slates of candidates as mandated by the bylaws in time for the May 2007 NPPA board of directors meeting, then current Regional officers will continue to serve until elections can be held.”
