DURHAM, NC (September 18, 2006) - The president of the National Press Photographers Association has released the following statement:
The National Press Photographers Association decries all violence against journalists anywhere in the world. Recently, we have learned of the death of a videographer in Somalia, the beatings of journalists in Khartoum, and the restricted movement of media in Uganda and Kenya. We fail to understand how interrupting the news reporting process – let alone injuring those engaged in it – could possibly help legitimate political causes. Silencing critics and independent observers can only suggest that those perpetrating such violence lack reasonable arguments in favor of their actions and causes. The NPPA calls on all governments and political leaders to encourage honest and complete reporting of events and political discussion within their borders.
