Survey Measures Attitudes About News Photo Manipulation

(August 16, 2006) - Dennis Dunleavy is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, OR, teaching visual journalism and digital technology. He is conducting an online survey about public attitudes toward photo manipulation in news images and the impact that manipulated photographs have had on foreign policy and public opinion.

Dunleavy invites photojournalists, picture editors, journalism academics, and the general public to participate in the new survey. He says one of the survey’s goals is to evaluate the public's level of understanding and distrust of news images following the recent discovery of digital manipulation in some news photographs that came out of the conflict in Lebanon.

The survey asks a range of questions, Dunleavy says, from the types of image manipulation to the influence manipulated news images may have on viewers. Participation is voluntary and confidential and takes about 5 minutes, he says. The results will be posted online at www.dennisdunleavy.com.

The survey can be taken online here.
