Position Description
You report to a knowledgeable, passionate Board of Directors, eager to help you succeed. You are responsible for implementing all Board decisions and policies as well as for strategic direction of the organization and for staff leadership. In short, you are the person directly responsible for implementing the mission of the organization.
Your specific responsibilities consist of the following areas:
PROGRAM: You will participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of all our national activities, including Best of Photojournalism, Flying Short Course, Women in Photojournalism, TV News Video Workshop, NPPF Airborne Seminar, Cutting Edge and Advanced Team Storytelling workshops, News Photographer magazine, the NPPA.org Web site as well as regional activities such as Northern Short Course and co-sponsored workshops such as Truth with a Camera. You have authority to approve schedules, budgets, and logistics for programs in order to maximize effectiveness and meet budgets. Actual program content decisions rest with program chairs.
SUPERVISION: Directly or indirectly, you supervise all administrative and program personnel and establish the means of maximizing employee skills. You are directly responsible for managing a central staff of six. Oversee staff, contractors and volunteers to produce annual training conferences. Oversee staff, contractors and volunteers to produce monthly and annual photojournalism competitions. You assure that performance and salary reviews are conducted in a timely fashion for all employees.
ADMINISTRATION: You are responsible for the effective administration of the National Press Photographers Association. This includes personnel policies and procedures, office management, property management, program support, contract management, compilation and distribution of various reports. You will run the central office and manage day-to-day workload.
FUNDRAISING: Work with Board and Committee Chairs to coordinate and centralize fundraising activities. Identify potential funding sources, evaluate and administer grants and gifts, establish and maintain positive relationships with donors.
MEMBERSHIP: You will initiate new programming to expand the organization in a dynamic and changing industry. Develop program to increase membership in the organization. Make recommendations to Board and implement upon approval.
FISCAL ACCOUNTABILITY: You are responsible for working with the NPPA Board, Treasurer and Finance Committee in order to maintain fiscal health, including compliance with standard accounting practices. Oversee an annual budget of $1.5 million. Prepare annual financial statement and work with incoming President to develop annual budget for board approval.
ADMINISTRATION: You are responsible for the effective administration of the National Press Photographers Association. This includes personnel policies and procedures, office management, property management, program support, contract management, compilation and distribution of various reports.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Create and maintain a collaborative environment between staff and Board. You are the staff’s liaison with the Board. You attend all Board meetings.
Qualifications
Management and Leadership Experience
You are a leader with a demonstrated ability to inspire others, to build effective teams, and to meet established organizational goals. You have financial management experience, including budget development and administration and audits (business background). You are a creative person who has found new and different ways to achieve your missions. You have a working knowledge of the nonprofit world, including effective Board collaboration. You have financial management experience, including budget development and administration and audits. You have experience planning events, including securing for facilities in cities across the country, coordinating travel and implementing promotional efforts to attract attendees. You have forged alliances with other entities and agencies in pursuit of your goals.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
You are an effective communicator, skilled in finding consensus without sacrificing quality or effectiveness in the process. You have excellent writing skills. You have a good sense of humor, and can communicate easily with subordinates, superiors and colleagues. People who have worked with and for you in the past would be pleased to do so again. You work well with diverse populations and in diverse locations.
Watchdog/Advocacy Experience
You have developed and executed successful programs that which improve understanding and support for the role of photojournalism in the media and educational establishment. (i.e.,, First Amendment protections, Cameras in the Courtroom, etc.).
