Baca Appointed Diversity Committee Chair

SAN ANTONIO, TX (June 12, 2006) – Anita Baca, a staff photography editor for the San Antonio Express-News, has been appointed the new chairperson of the NPPA Diversity Committee, NPPA president Alicia Wagner Calzada announced this weekend. Baca replaces the committee’s former chairperson, Fred Sweets, who for many years was a picture editor in Washington, DC, with the Associated Press.

“A longtime NPPA volunteer from Region 8, Anita has been involved in the planning of several events in the Region including a women’s conference, two NPPA Flying Short Course stops, and the Best of Photojournalism conference in San Antonio in 2005,” Calzada said. “Always on the lookout for new and interesting talent, Anita will help ensure diversity within the NPPA and within our events.”

“While some of us may find ourselves in very diverse environments it is not yet time to sit back and ignore the need to work for diversity. We must pay attention to the issues facing minorities and women and make sure that we seek as many different perspectives as possible in the work of our organization.”
