National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association Excellence in Journalism Awards

WASHINGTON, DC (May 30, 2006) – The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) has announced their Excellence in Journalism Awards to recognize outstanding coverage of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) issues in print news, print feature, print opinion/editorial, television, radio, online, student and photojournalism.

Jason Lloyd Clement, the organization’s communications and marketing manager, says the awards were established to foster, recognize and reward excellence in journalism on issues related to the LGBT community. The Excellence in Journalism Awards started in 1993 and the photojournalism category was added in 2003.

The deadline for entering is June 30, 2006, and initial publication or broadcast must have occurred between June 1, 2005 and May 31, 2006. This year’s judging by a panel of photojournalism professionals will take place throughout July. Winners will be recognized in November during NLGJA's Excellence in Journalism Awards & Hall of Fame Ceremony in Chicago, IL.

Past winners have included Paul Chinn, Deanne Fitzmaurice, Kim Komenich, Elizabeth Mangelsdorf, and John Storey, of the San Francisco Chronicle, for “Gay Marriage,” and Joyce Marshall, of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, for "Becoming Maddie."

Complete rules, prize details, guidelines, and an entry form, are available online here, or contact Jason Lloyd Clement for more information.
