NPPA Joins EP, APA, and ASMP in New York Times Letter Campaign

Dear NPPA members,

The New York Times has revised their freelance contract but there are several issues that are still of concern to many, mainly the section on work-for-hire. (This section of the contract can be viewed online at http://www.asmp.org/news/spec2004/nytcontract_update2.php).

The groups Editorial Photographers (EP), American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), and Advertising Photographers of America (APA) have asked NPPA to join with them in a letter writing campaign to The New York Times regarding the contract.

This invitation to photojournalists urging them to write to the Times does not take sides on the issue, but it asks photojournalists to let their voices be heard if they disagree with the contract or are dissatisfied with its wording.

This is a cooperative agreement amongst EP, ASMP, APA, and NPPA. It is historic, as I believe this is the first time that this type of joint campaign has been done. This invitation to write a letter to the Times comes from myself along with Brain Smith, EP president, and the EP board of directors; George Fulton, APA president; and Susan Carr, ASMP president, and the ASMP board of directors.

Our organizations have united to urge you — whether you have ever worked for the Times or not — to state your concerns in a SHORT note to Michele McNally, director of photography at The New York Times, pointing out one or two of the points in the contract that you find objectionable. Please address your letter to:

Michele McNally
Director of Photography
The New York Times
229 West 43rd Street
New York, NY 10036

And let your voices be heard!

Signed,
Bob Gould, NPPA President
