  • Freelance Photojournalist since 2004

In the twelve hours leading up to Hurricane Katrinas landfall, I was struggling with the most difficult questions of my career: Could I contribute as a photojournalist? Would I be helping the situation? My ability to contribute in any given situation had never been in question before. My ideals are strong and were telling me that I had a responsibility to stay and document New Orleans as it drowned with many of its citizens still in their homes. But at six p.m. on Sunday, August , I came to an unsettling conclusionif I stayed, I might become part of the problem instead of part of the solution. And I believe that my responsibility as a journalist also requires me to leave a situation if ever that becomes the case. I find no solace in knowing that I couldnt have helped, but I do find comfort in the fact that I did not contribute to the catastrophe.
Now, over a week after my flight out of the city and my difficult decision put my journalistic ambitions aside, I am looking for opportunities to begin contributing to a community again. It has become clear to me that my skills are still of little use in the New Orleans area, so I am searching for a new place to document with the same respect and care with which I treated New Orleans. Using my camera as an informative and helpful tool, I aspire to impact the world one community at a time. I hope you can help me to work towards making a difference through photojournalism.
I believe that my fresh perspective would be of value to your staff. I would take situations that are commonplace to a photojournalist who has worked in the area for a long time and present them from new and undiscovered angles. I have made a commitment to discovering and informing communities using photojournalism as my tool, and I hope you will help me to honor that commitment.
