|
| 1)"Wide Open Spaces" San Jose Mercury News |
Beautiful use of photography, text, typography and white space to elevate the presence of the subject.
|
| |
| 2) "Daddy's Little Girls" The Palm Beach Post |
Wonderful visual story telling. Felt I was there.
|
| |
| 3) "Day on the Trail: Joe Lieberman" Concord Monitor |
The sequencing and scale of most of these photos was exactly right. Again, the final presentation led us into the story and clarified the subject.
|
| |
| HM) "Paris" The Palm Beach Post |
The mood of this page has enormous presence...one of the few times we have seen this type of style work beautifully.
|
| |
| HM) "Slow Times at Speed Weeks" The Palm Beach Post |

Judged at the Richmond Times-Dispatch by Dan Beatty, Photo Quality Coordinator; Mark Gormus, Photographer; Dean Hoffmeyer, Photographer; Kevin Morley, Photographer; and Bruce Parker, Photographer.
|
| 1) "The Green Machine" The Hartford Courant |
This was unanimous. We made sure everybody saw this...the editing was flawless and the presentation took me into the experience.
|
| |
| 2) "59 Hours of Basketball"The Kansas City Star (Star magazine) |
Beautifully done. Nice use of vertical/horizontal double truck toward the end -- not only was it not expected, it was done well -- that's two surprises.
|
| |
| 3) "The Removal: The Knock at the Door" The Hartford Courant |
The sterile presentation of this story works beautifully with the subject matter. Photo editing is done well. Again, the final presentation (and the steps leading to it) pulled us into and through the story.
|
| |
| HM) "Citizen Soldiers" The Yakima Herald-Republic |
| HM) "Reconstructing Afghanistan" Arkansas Democrat-Gazette |
In both of the HMs in this category, the overall effect is strong. But there were redundant images which slowed us down. The typography began to overwhelm in Citizen soldiers, and we would have sized some of the images differently in both. Reconstructing Afghanistan's cover seemed like a "safe" decision -- not necessarily weak, but safe. More picture editing and more work on typography and page design might have placed these two entries.
