1st Place Feature/Single Picture: “Pinball Wizard”
Nathan Morgan/The Midland Daily News

Quint player, Tyler Fox, a senior at Midland High, practices the song Pinball Wizard with his fellow band members Wednesday evening in a parking lot adjacent to the school. The song, which is from the musical rock opera Tommy, will serve as the opener for this year's Broadway-themed field show. The group's first performance will be on September 11 in Midland, during the halftime show of the Midland High and Bay City Western game.

Judges’ comments for the category

We felt this was a good strong category, and it was hard to pick winners since there were several very strong, storytelling images. Pinball Wizard is just one of those strong single feature shots where it all comes together--the light, the angle, colors, composition. Freedom Walk 2 was also very strong with classic flag colors, strong compositional elements, and a nice moment all working together. Last, and not least, was Keeping an Eye Out, which does a great job at telling a story visually. All the elements work together to support this moment, this little story in ordinary life. Very good work in this category.
