TV News Photography: Station of the Year

I watched the quality of the winners steadily increase as the market category got bigger. Quality was certainly in the shooting and editing but more so in the story telling. It's the story that makes me care about what I'm watching. For the last few years, I have been of the school that market size matters less and less. I have been corrected. I encourage everyone to look at the tapes of the winners.

Small Market

Through the Smaller market judging WHO-TV shined through as the top pick. They had good stories along with good technical skills. Story choice was, of course, a key skill that helped too. R-news took second place. They had a strong showing with good stories that made me care.

Medium Market

WAVE was our pick here. I think they proved that storytelling, great shooting, crew teamwork, and editing are a priority in their shop. "Evicted by Flames" was a spot news story that stood out from all the rest. Sometimes luck will go a long way. If more spot news could have elements like this one, Spot news would become a favorite category. Overall, very nice work.

Large Market

WTVF was the much-debated choice for the winner; though for me, the choice seemed clear. We saw a nice mix of interesting, unique stories. Good pacing, composition, good nats and all around solid photojournalism that came together. I think the traditional values of the NPPA shine while using fresh ideas and techniques.
