TV News Photography: Judges' Choice

Honoree
Jonathan Malat, KARE: Raising His Legacy

The competition for the Judges Choice Award involved two distinctly different genres of news stories. Although "The Sand and The Fury" demonstrated our focus as judges this year as to deciding winning stories on issue based content vs. feature related stories. After much discussion and debate about content and widespread public interest stories winning over light hearted related features, we decided to unaminously choose "Raising His Legacy" as the Judges Choice winner.

"The Sand and The Fury" made it clear to us as a group that the photojournalist/reporter team worked extremely hard in difficult Iraqi heat, sand, and military conditions to tell their feature and serious feature stories. However, "Raising his Legacy" was technically flawless with a storyline to match. These high standards made it our winner.

"Legacy" had at least four strong elements of storytelling surprises. "Legacy" peeled away many layers on an onion in telling the story of a struggling family owned and operated small town movie theatre. This story exemplifies the art of tv news storytelling. Elements of conversation were throughout, strong moments of laughter and sadness captured as well as capturing interesting characters and crisp natsound.

"The Sand and The Fury", although shot in difficult conditions, did not carry the emotional weight and creativity that "Legacy" had throughout the entire story.
