Judges' Comments

After a lengthy discussion with the judges attempting to find a single package that demonstrated the best use of the web, the panel eventually recognized The New York Times on the Web as an example of a site that has truly helped the evolution of online storytelling.

At first, individual judges highlighted packages having their own strengths and merits: the well-paced and well-presented storytelling of usatoday.com’s “The State Funeral of Ronald Wilson Reagan,” “Chiloe Stories” for its breadth and depth, and finally, the interactive component in MSNBC’s The Year in Pictures 2004.

In the end, however, the panel of judges focused more on the overall body of work produced by a single journalism entity. Ultimately it was felt that The New York Times multimedia team had done the most to advance “the evolution of web-based photojournalism” through the sheer quality and quantity of multimedia storytelling they produced throughout the 2004 year.
