Best of Photojournalism 2004: Picture Editing
Contest Instructions for Entering
Overview
The picture editing competition is an attempt to recognize the individuals and publications that identify and encourage excellence in photojournalism and reward that work with effective usage on the pages of their publications. Picture editing is a complex process involving many steps along the way to excellence. Picture selection, photographer coaching and page design are but a few of the steps in the process. In some cases this is done by one individual and in others the work involves many individuals. The identification of the individual or individuals responsible for the success of each entry in the editing division in many cases is difficult, but it is the responsibility of the entrant to make that decision.
Number of entries allowed
There is no limit on the number of entries allowed per editor or editing team, but we suggest that entrants exercise “good editing” in entry preparation.
Editing Entry Preparation
The intent of the Best of Photojournalism Picture Editing contest is to judge the best of picture editing in each of the categories published during the past year.
With that in mind, contest judges should see what the readers saw. Therefore, tear sheets are preferred. Multiple page entries should be connected so that the judges see them in the publication order.
If a tear sheet is not available, a full-sized print (print-out) of the page will do.
PDF's of the entry are acceptable for judging if they are sized for digital screen projection.
The spirit of the competition is to judge the editing and presentation in final publication form, as the reader saw it. Presenting a PDF with content different from the final printed publication is inconsistent with the goals and ethics of the competition, and will result in the entry being disqualified.
- Submit original printed material and PDF only, no photo copies
will be accepted.
PDF Entries:- Only screen resolution entries are accepted; each entry should be accompanied by a tearsheet.
- File names should start with the category code and should include the entrant's last name.
For example: en9-smith.pdf - No slide show or special program are needed: simply save the PDF files on the disk. Multiple page entries should be saved in a folder. Use the category name as the name of the folder.
- One entry form should be submitted with the disk (rather than one per entry)--but include a list of categories entered.
- Multiple-page entries should be numbered in the order in which you wish them to be viewed.
For example: EM-Sale-1.pdf, EM-Sale-2.pdf, etc.
- Submit tearsheets, unless complete edition of the publication is required for judging.
- Tape the entry label to upper left corner of the back of each entry. This will also serve as your entry form. No entry will be accepted without the entry label. PDF entries should include the entry form as a PDF file added to the end of each entry.
- Multiple page category entries should indicate the number of each page (1 of 2, 2 of 2, etc.).
- Entry deadline is February 13, 2004.
